Georgia can be an attractive destination for many people, because it offers many beautiful, interesting locations and it seems to be cheap. So how much will it exactly cost you to live here? To answer this, we will firstly cover the cost of places to live, we will look at several areas and how the prices to live there differ. After that we will look at how much could food and utilities cost.
How much does a place to live in Tbilisi cost?
You’ve decided to live in Georgia, congratulations! First thing you should find is a place to live. A place you can call home, be safe and be comfortable in. So what are your options? Most popular locations for expats would be Old Tbilisi, Vake and Saburtalo. These three locations are the most common areas for expats to live in.
Old Tbilisi
Location with historical buildings, old parts of the city. Living here means beautiful views, everything is relatively close. However, it also means tourist prices and tons and tons of tourists. If you don’t mind paying extra for a better location old Tbilisi is the ideal place to live. A one bedroom apartment can cost you anywhere from 120 USD a month to 600 USD a month, with an average price of 460 USD for a 60 m2 apartment. Two bedroom apartment on the other hand range from 650 Usd to 1000 USD, with an average price of 820 USD for a 100 m2 apartment. Vake
Very popular area for many expats, it has many good buildings you can live in, it has many good restaurants you can go to. Unfortunately this location doesn’t have a metro, the only means of transport here are buses or taxi. It has a great park that offers great way how to spend time on the weekends. A one bedroom apartment can cost you anywhere from 100 USD a month to 1300 USD a month, with an average price of 450 USD for a 60 m2 apartment. Saburtalo
Saburtalo is a location where a lot of international students live, it has many universities, a hospital and the biggest park in Tbilisi is currently being build there. A one bedroom apartment can cost you anywhere from 70 USD a month to 2500 USD a month, with an average price of 420 USD for a 60 m2 apartment. Two bedroom apartment on the other hand range from 120 USD to 3500 USD, with an average price of 580 USD for a 100 m2 apartment. Food, utilities?
Now that we know how much will a place to live cost you, what about the food, utilities and entertainment? After all you won’t come to Tbilisi just to stare at the walls of your new apartment.
All these costs are very individual, everything depends on what you might need, the way you decide to spend your time and what you eat. Let's assume you are a one person living in a 60 m2 apartment. Utilities like water, gas and electricity could be around anywhere from 25-100 GEL, depending on how much you use electricity, gas and the time of the year. If you are not very demanding about your internet, then the basic package will cost you 30 GEL. The food cost varies as it depends on how much you decide to spend in restaurants, on food delivery and cooking at home. Lest say you choose to mainly cook at home, but you don’t limit your self on whenever you feel like getting a food delivery or going to a restaurant. The food you buy and cook at home can run around 470 GEL and the food delivery + restaurants could be around 300 GEL, all together 770 GEL a month. If we add everything up, for our basic needs we need around 900 GEL, which with the current currency rate is around 270 USD.
So what's the total cost of living in Tbilisi?
As we’ve stated earlier, cost of living is very individual thing and everything depends on what we choose to do and how we choose to spend our time. We’ve looked at how much could a place to live cost you, which if you are alone was around 420 USD. After that we’ve explored how much could food and utilities cost you, which is around 270 USD. This means that a place to live, food and utilities will cost you around 690 USD a month. This is a broad estimate and we are not saying that this is exactly how much you will need to have in order to live happily in Tbilisi, but it is safe to say that if you have around 800 USD a month, you will have enough money to get food, place to stay, internet and entertainment.
